Werth Family Foundation Student Docent Program

Daisy, a Peer Docent Program Graduate

“Before participating in the Docent Program, I was shy and afraid to speak. But by becoming a leader - taking other kids around the museum and talking about art with them, I became more confident in my life.”

Dasy Saldano
12th grade student, Harding High School
Peer Docent Program participant

The Werth Family Foundation Student Docent Program is a successful after-school program in effect at the museum since 2000. Students from area schools attend training sessions with an art educator to learn about the HMA collection and how to encourage their peers to think about art as they view the collection. The peer docents then guide their fellow students through the gallery and the college while stimulating thought and discussion about the objects. Pictured below are some of the docents from Luis Muñoz Marín School in Bridgeport during a recent visit to the museum.

The Werth Family Foundation Student Docent Program is funded in part by grants from the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism , The Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation, and the Werth Family Foundation.
