Mr. Michael Gugger has been in machining and manufacturing for his entire career. Prior to his Director position at Housatonic Community College he started his own consulting company called Machining Consulting Services. Mike has also worked in the Medical Device field at Symmetry Medical as a Division Manager of Engineering and Technology. He focused his efforts on upgrading production technology and driving continuous improvement throughout the organization. He initiated the company's Lean revitalization, including the startup of the Total Production Maintenance (TPM) system and Set-up Reduction efforts driven through team-based initiatives.
He has worked in the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) program based out of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The MEP system has satellites throughout the country that primarily focus on Lean implementations.
In addition to Mike's full Lean/Continuous Improvement skill set gained from that experience; he also has the skills to drive technical and machining improvements. Mike's roles have included the Technical Consulting Services Leader for the State of Connecticut MEP; Manager of Machining Services, Manager of Special Projects for Supply Chain & Lean Engagements and Manager Manufacturing Research Lab at the Ohio MEP. He has served as a Tooling and Process Research Engineer. Prior to joining to MEP system, he worked as the Manager of CNC Programming and as a Manufacturing Engineer in various organizations for over 10 years.
Mike has a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Lowell (now UMass-Lowell) and earned his Master of Business Administration from Capella University. He is a Certified Lean Sensei, a GE trained Six Sigma Green-Belt, and a NIST certified Lean Training Leader. Mike also writes about machining and manufacturing with more than thirty articles in both commercial and peer review publications. Before he returned to school he worked as a machinist for over ten years progressing from a manual and CNC machinist, to Set-up and Lead-Person in this "hands-on" phase of his career.
