FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEHCC/PEOPLE’S PARTNERING TO OFFER STUDENT INTERNSHIPS
BRIDGEPORT, CONN. - Housatonic Community College (HCC) and People’s Bank have teamed up to offer banking internships to incoming HCC freshmen. People’s is offering five internships a year to seniors who plan to attend HCC in the fall after graduating from public high schools in the Bridgeport area. The interns will receive a $1,200 annual college scholarship to be used for HCC tuition and books as well as a paid internship at People’s branches in the greater Bridgeport area. “This is a tremendous opportunity for students,” said HCC Academic Dean Anita Gliniecki. “It will provide them with a valuable scholarship, a source of income during the year, and on-the-job training that could lead to a career at People’s in the financial services industry. “The internship is transferable, which means graduating HCC students can take it with them to a four-year college in Connecticut,” she added. “People’s Bank has always been a strong supporter of higher education and youth development,” said Hank Mandel, executive vice president, Organization Effectiveness at People’s. “By partnering with Housatonic Community College, we can reach out to a wide pool of area high school students with an interest in retail customer service or financial services and help them prepare for potential positions at the bank,” he said. The program is open to high school seniors who have at least a 3.0 average, leadership and community activity experience, and an interest in a career in retail business/ financial services at People’s. Applications, which must be received by Feb. 14, can be obtained by contacting Mary Beth McKenna, at 203-338-7652 or by e-mail at MaryBeth.Mckenna@peoples.com “One attractive feature of the program is that it is not limited to business majors,” Gliniecki said. “Students who are majoring in a wide variety of science, behavioral and social science, and humanities programs are also eligible,” she said. The joint internship with People’s is just one example of the college’s ongoing commitment to meeting the education, training and research needs of the business community. HCC was instrumental in creating the Bridgeport Economic Resource Center and the Metal Manufacturers Education and Training Alliance (METAL). Most recently, Housatonic Community College has teamed up with Washington D.C.-based Association of Community College Trustees; CCbenefits, Inc of Moscow, ID; and the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce, to create the Housatonic Research Institute, which provides strategic planning information to the state’s businesses. Throughout its 163-year history in the state, People’s Bank has been a strong supporter of youth development programs such as the youth mentoring program sponsored by the Governor’s Prevention Partnership. Nearly 100 bank employees mentor children for one hour a week both at the corporate offices and in various locations throughout the state. About HCCSince it moved to the new campus in January 1997, HCC's enrollment has increased 77 percent. According to the most recent statistics released by the Washington D.C- based American Association of Community Colleges, Housatonic was the Northeast’s second fastest-growing community college and its fastest-growing in terms of full-time students. In response to increased enrollments and changing workplace needs both regionally and nationally, Housatonic has increased the number of programs offered from 43 to 63 since moving to its new campus. The campus is located at 900 Lafayette Blvd. in downtown Bridgeport, less than 150 yards off I-95 (exit 27) and Rte. 8 (Exit 1.) and a block from the Ballpark and Arena at Harbor Yard.
