HOUSATONIC COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO HOST HEALTH AND WELLNESS FAIR

BRIDGEPORT-- Housatonic Community College will conduct a health and wellness fair for the college and general public Wednesday, April 20.

To promote community awareness to health issues, the fair, dubbed “Healthy Campus 2010.” will offer insight into traditional and alternative health and wellness practices. It is open to the general public as well as HCC faculty, staff and students.

"This fair will not only address your physical health, but your mind, body and spirit as well," said Linda Griffin, HCC Health Services Coordinator. “It will offer invaluable health and wellness information and as well as free testing that can help you get a sense of your general health.”

Exhibitors will include Community Partners in Action, Healing Hands Wellness Center, Hopeline Women’s Center, Integrated Medical Center, Life Visions, Sickle Cell Association, State Farm Insurance, Southwest Community Health Center, and St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

“Among the free services offered will be massages, bone density tests,

body fat measurements, mammograms, as well as of screenings for visual, hearing, and oral health,” Griffin said. “In addition, information will be available about general health and wellness, chiropractic and naturopathic medicine, sickle cell anemia, eating disorders, HIV, breast and cervical cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, mental health issues, and domestic violence.”

“Also, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the experience of aromatherapy and Reiki Therapy and join us for a healthy snack, free prizes, and more,” Griffin said.

Attendees can also take advantage of dancing for health. Free introductory lessons in line, salsa and belly dancing will be given from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., she said.

With an eight year old campus in the heart of Connecticut’s largest city, Housatonic is one of the country’s fastest growing public community colleges. Since it moved to the new downtown campus in 1997, Housatonic’s enrollment has increased 77 percent. According to the most recent statistics released by the Washington D.C.- based American Association of Community Colleges, Housatonic was the Northeast’s second fastest-growing community college and its fastest-growing in terms of full time students.

In response to increased enrollments and changing workplace needs both regionally and nationally, Housatonic has increased the number of programs offered from 43 to 63 since moving to its new campus.

The college is located at 900 Lafayette Blvd. (Exit 27 off I-95 and exit 1 off Rte 8 South) in downtown Bridgeport, one block from the Arena at Harbor Yard.
