AWARD-WINNING POET TO SPEAK AT HCC HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE

BRIDGEPORT – Award-winning poet Stephen Herz of Westport will speak at a holocaust remembrance exhibit May 5 from noon and 5:00 p.m. at Housatonic Community College.

At this interactive exhibit, being held in honor of the victims of the Holocaust and all modern day genocides, Herz will read from his book, “Holocaust Remembrance Day, From Liberation to Justice.” Concentration camp survivors Anita Schorr and Zelig Preis, now a HCC student and Trumbull resident, will also be present to share their artwork and experiences.

This interactive event will feature video clips, computer web sites, posters, artwork, music, photo collages, and graffiti boards for “silent” conversations about the exhibit. There will also be poetry readings, and opportunities to write draw and create a memorial, as well as holocaust survivors who will share their experiences.

The event, sponsored by the HCC Student Senate and the Gay Straight Alliance, is free and open to the public. It will be held in Room A101 at the college.

Due to its nature, the exhibit is not recommended for people under the age of 13.

With an eight year old campus in the heart of Connecticut’s largest city, Housatonic is one of the country’s fastest growing public community colleges. Since it moved to the new downtown campus in 1997, Housatonic’s enrollment has increased 77 percent. According to the most recent statistics released by the Washington D.C.- based American Association of Community Colleges, Housatonic was the Northeast’s second fastest-growing community college and its fastest-growing in terms of full-time students.

In response to increased enrollments and changing workplace needs both regionally and nationally, Housatonic has increased the number of programs offered from 43 to 63 since moving to its new campus.

The college is located in downtown Bridgeport one block from the Arena at Harbor Yard.
