HCC PRESIDENT HADLEY TO ADDRESS NEW YORK LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY– Dr. Janis M. Hadley, president of Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, CT, will address the Leadership Tools for Women Conference at Dutchess Community College June 2.

Dr. Hadley, who has directed Housatonic through a growth period that has seen the college’s enrollment increase by more that 77 percent, will address the subject of mentoring and networking. She’ll discuss the how’s and value of mentoring and networking as tools to use in attaining leadership positions.

“Mentoring and networking can get you from here to there,” she said in remarks prepared for delivery. “They take work, initiative and commitment.”

The day-long conference is designed for women working in higher education who wish to heighten their understanding of the contemporary issues facing women as they assume leadership roles at their institutions.

“It is important that women who aspire to leadership positions seek a mentor and learn how to maximize the experience,” she added. “A mentee must be a superlative listener and a learner forever.”

“Adult, life-long learning is a pre-requisite to the process”, she said.

One mentor may not be enough to be successful, she said. Rather, it may be necessary to have a number of mentors who can provide help in a variety of areas.

The same holds true of networking, Dr. Hadley said. “Networking represents learning from a wide range of perspectives. Everyone needs two kinds of networks: a personal, support network and a professional one.”

The address is a homecoming of sorts for Dr. Hadley. From 1987-1996, she served as Vice President of Planning, Assoc. Vice President of Administration, and Dean of Enrollment Planning of the Culinary Institute of America in nearby Hyde Park. From 1985 to 1987, she served as Assistant Dean of Community Services at Dutchess Community College.

From 1978 to 1986, she served as Registrar and Admissions Counselor at Sullivan County Community College.

Since joining Housatonic in August, 1996, Dr. Hadley oversaw the move of the college to a new downtown campus from temporary quarters in the city’s East End. Since the January 1997 move, the college’s enrollment has increased by 77 percent, making Housatonic the Northeast’s second fastest-growing community college and its fastest-growing in terms of full-time students.

In response to increased enrollments and changing workplace needs both regionally and nationally, Housatonic has increased the number of programs offered from 43 to 63 since moving to its new campus.
