HCC’S “BEST AND BRIGHTEST” HONORED AT AWARDS NIGHT

BRIDGEPORT – Top scholars at Housatonic Community College were honored at the 38th Awards Night Ceremony held Tuesday, May 24 at the college.

The students honored at the ceremony represent “the best of Housatonic’s best,” said Richard F. Fagan of Stamford, emcee for the evening. “When you chose to pursue a higher education, you accept a challenge: to do what’s necessary to build a better future for yourself … and your family,” Fagan said. “Accepting this challenge means sacrifice:  it means spending long hours in class – even after a long workday. It means countless hours in front of books and computer screens. It means trading recreation and enjoyment for hard work.”

The Housatonic students honored at the event, he said, are a select group. “They accepted that challenge,” he said. “They made that sacrifice. And they did it well! So well that they are the best and the brightest of the class of 2005!”

Four students won the prestigious The Flint Prize - Academic Dean's Award, for maintaining a 4.0 average during his Housatonic career. Those students were Amanda Evans of Fairfield, Alina Probierz of Bridgeport, Cynthia Therriault of Trumbull and Elizabeth Tibbals of Stratford.

Evans and Ricardo S. Nogueiro of Trumbull were tied for winning the most awards, each winning six. In addition to the Flint Prize, Evans’ awards include the Dale Ward Endowed Scholarship; the Dale Ward Scholarship; Outstanding Service to the Student Newspaper, Horizons; The Post Publishing Prize for Outstanding Achievement; and Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.

Nogueiro’s awards included Student Senate Leadership Award the Housatonic Foundation Scholar award, the Housatonic Scholar award The Student Senate Leadership award, the Business Administration Management Accomplishment Award, the Sid Lipshires Prize for Social Activism, and Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.

With an eight-year-old campus in the heart of Connecticut's largest city, Housatonic is one of the country's fastest-growing public community colleges.  Since it moved to the new campus in January 1997, HCC's enrollment has increased 77 percent. According to the most recent statistics released by the Washington D.C.- based American Association of Community Colleges, Housatonic was the Northeast’s second fastest-growing community college and its fastest-growing in terms of full-time students.

In response to increased enrollments and changing workplace needs both regionally and nationally, Housatonic has increased the number of programs offered from 43 to 63 since moving to its new campus.
