FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT ANSON SMITH AT 203-332-5229 HCC DEAN HONORED FOR NEW DEGREE PROGRAMBRIDGEPORT – Housatonic Community College Academic Dean Anita Gliniecki has been honored by the regions’ leading business for her leadership role in developing a market-sensitive degree program to be introduced this fall. The new degree, an associate’s in industrial technology, was developed by an advisory committee drawn from area businesses, business associations, and high schools with the needs of business in mind. That degree combines customized academic work with hands-on training. Gliniecki’s role in the program led to her receiving the Bridgeport Regional Business Council’s Impact Award for involvement in the community during the past year. She was one of six Impact Award recipients. She worked extensively with the advisory committee while the group defined what programs were needed and learning objectives. She then put the program together and brought it to the Board of Trustees for Community Technical Colleges, where it was approved. “Dean Gliniecki has expanded on the work the METAL has done, and carried it to the next level,” said Paul Timpanelli, CEO of the Bridgeport Regional Business Council. “Students can benefit from that work and translate it into the workforce.” Through the support of a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, METAL created a comprehensive training program tailored to the specific needs of member companies. Since the program began in early 2001, METAL has provided workforce training opportunities to over 500 individuals. “Developing this program is a textbook example of market-driven education,” said Gliniecki. “We created a forum for business to tell us its needs and we created a program to meet those needs.” The new degree program is targeted towards high school students with a technical background and current employees in local industries seeking to advance their careers. “This is an example of our commitment our students,” Gliniecki said.
