HCC PROF RECEIVES NATIONAL WRITING AWARD FOR ARTICLE SOLVING AMATEUR RADIO PROBLEM

BRIDGEPORT – Housatonic Community College professor Paul Danzer of Norwalk has received a national technical WRITING award for a landmark article solving an antenna problem that has long plagued amateur radio operators.

Danzer, a noted authority on electronics, received the 2004 Bill Orr Technical Writing Award from the American Radio Relay League for an article entitled “Open wire feed line – A second look,” which appeared in QST, the official journal of the ARRL.

In the article, Danzer explains how to set up a high frequency, multi-band antenna for radio reception. The article appeared in the April, 2004 issue of QST, the journal of the National Association for Amateur Radio

“The theory of doing it properly has been known for many years,” he explained. “But the equipment needed to do it had been designed improperly.”

The article, he said, dealt with setting up such an antenna in view of this problem.

According to QST Editor Steve Ford, Danzer has the ability to explain technical subjects in a way that is easy for the laymen to understand. “Paul’s article was a well done explanation of balanced feed lines,” he said.

Danzer’s article concluded that with a little care, open wire feed lines can allow using one dipole on many bands.

“I am surprised and proud to be named in the same sentence as Bill Orr, who was a major contributor to the ARRL goal of providing practical technology to radio amateurs around the world,” Danzer said. “I am grateful that the editors of QST have allowed me to make a small contribution to that goal.”

Throughout his 30 years in engineering, Danzer, who received his amateur radio license in 1953, has worked as an ARRL staff member and served as a book editor. He penned the ARRL books “Your Ham Radio Antenna Companion” and “PC’s in the Ham Shack,” which he co-authored. “Amateur radio has played a large part in my career as an engineer,” Danzer said.

With an extensive background in computers and electronics and 11 radar-related patents to his credit, Danzer is a sought-after news source on these areas, particularly computer problems and viruses, radio frequency energy, microwaves, technology management; and aircraft transportation issues.

He has been quoted extensively in Connecticut newspapers and has appeared on radio talk showsHe is the author of two books and numerous magazine articles.

Danzer received Bachelor of Engineering Education from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and a Master of Science from Newark College of Engineering. His computer science courses at HCC are in demand.
