HCC OFFERS EMT COURSE

By Angelica Lawrence

BRIDGEPORT—Interested in a medical career?  Do you want to help people who need emergency medical care? If so, Housatonic Community College’s new Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) course is for you.

The EMT course is one of more than 100 credit- free fast track, no nonsense courses that HCC offers for student’s professional advancement or personal enrichment. The courses are designed to give you what you need when you need it, running throughout the year, with new courses starting weekly.

“The EMT-B course is designed to comply with the National DOT Curriculum and allows students to have the knowledge needed to take the National Registry exam for certification,” said Jason Zigmont, a Paramedic/EMS-Instructor and representative of American Medical Response.

The American Medical Response is an organization that is responsible for emergency medical care and for providing paramedic level service throughout Fairfield County. The AMR and Housatonic Community College have joined forces in bringing this new course to give students an advanced start in the medical field.

“An EMT-Basic certification not only would allow a student to get a job with an ambulance company or hospital, but is also a prerequisite for many careers such as physical training, criminal justice and firefighting,” said Zigmont.

The cost of this 140-hour, non-credit course is $649.00.  The course lectures will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 5- Dec.12 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in room A234. The course practicals will take place on Saturdays, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12, and Dec. 10 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in room A101.

American Medical Response will be supplying all necessary course materials.

The course also includes 10 hours of hands-on medical experience, where students will have the opportunity to work on an ambulance.

In addition, this course is available to all International students and requires that students have GED’s or high school. Students under the age of 18 will need parental approval to register. American Medical Response staff, which has years of experience both as EMS providers and EMS instructors, will be teaching the course.
