HCC ALUMNUS HONORED AT HISPANIC BUSINESS EXPO ‘05

BRIDGEPORT--Housatonic Community College 2005 graduate Stephen D. Morrow of Milford has been honored for his design of an advertisement for the Hispanic Business Expo.

In the Spring of 2005, the Hispanic Business Expo began looking for students who could design a flyer for their organization. John Favret of Uncasville, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design said that he was approached by Anna Cruz, assistant to HCC’s Dean of Students, and asked if any of his students could design such a flyer.

 According to Cruz, The Hispanic Merchants Association was in search of a flyer that showed creativity, dedication and responsibility. The ad also needed to be eye-catching, balanced in color and style, and deliver a message in an easy way.

“I asked each of my independent study students to come up with a design,” said Favret. 

Morrow, one of the five students who participated, won the contest with a colorful puzzle piece that is joining together two hands shaking in agreement.

Morrow said that chose puzzle image, because he thought of businesses coming together. The colors within the design represented the Hispanic flag.

As a result, the piece was given a great amount of exposure. Not only did it give Morrow the title of winner, but was made into a billboard on I-95 North.

“I was happy,” said Morrow, in regards of seeing his design on display.  Cruz explained that she thought the piece was very creative and artistic.

On Friday, Sept. 23, the Hispanic Business Expo honored Morrow at its sixth-annual ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event was held at City Hall Annex in Bridgeport, CT, and Mayor John M. Fabrizi presided in honoring Morrow with a plaque of acknowledgement.

“It was nice, because they gave background information on me,” he said. “I got acquainted with the business leaders and got requests to do flyers for their businesses.”

Morrow will be attending Savannah School of Art and Design in January 2006.
