Housatonic Community College Receives Grant from Pitney Bowes Literacy and Education Fund
Gift Supports “College Math for Success” Program
STAMFORD, Conn., Sept. 10, 2007 – Barbara Johnson, President of the Housatonic Community College Foundation, Inc., today announced that the Pitney Bowes Literacy and Education Fund, Inc. has awarded a $50,000 grant to the Housatonic Community College. The gift is part of the College’s Pathways to Success Major Gift Campaign and will support a self-paced, computer-based math program.
“We are very excited about Housatonic’s innovative math program,” said Polly O’Brien Morrow, President, Pitney Bowes Literacy and Education Fund. “The program addresses the industry-wide need for employees with superior mathematical skills. We are pleased that our support will help contribute to the development of well-trained individuals who can help advance future economic growth.”
The self-paced, computer-based program allows students to attend class in a computer math lab with both an instructor and tutors in attendance to assist them. Students can progress as quickly or as slowly as they need in order to master the concepts being taught. This individualized instruction enables students to learn at their own pace, letting them proceed to the next level course when they are ready. The college expects that the combined use of technology and individualized instruction will significantly contribute to student success.
Separately, Pitney Bowes Inc. has initiated two paid internships (one full-year, one semester-long) for qualified Housatonic students in Business Administration programs.
