Alumni Hall of Fame Fundraising Gala Set for November
21
LeVar Burton to Present
LeVar Burton – star of the miniseries Roots, long-time host of the award-winning PBS children’s series Reading Rainbow, and co-star of the Emmy award-winning television series Star-Trek: The Next Generation – will be a special guest and presenter at a Gala hosted by the Housatonic Community College Foundation on November 21 at the HCC Events Center in Beacon Hall. Mr. Burton is internationally recognized as a literacy advocate.
The Gala will raise funds to support scholarships awarded by the Foundation to eligible HCC students. This year, due to the decline in college loans granted by traditional lenders, it is estimated that student need will more than double that of last year, reaching the $1.5 million level. These funds are critical for the majority of students who come to HCC to receive the education they need to continue their studies leading to a degree, to become qualified participants in the workplace, and productive members of the community.
A feature of the evening will be the HCC’s first Alumni Hall of Fame induction. Three select HCC alumni who have distinguished themselves in their careers and in the realm of community service will be honored. Their induction will serve as an important reminder to Housatonic’s current students that with an education, they can achieve their goals. The black tie Gala will include dinner and dancing. Mr. Burton will autograph photos and other items available for auction at the event.
