HCC Enrolls 6,132 Students Sets New Record
Up 131 percent in 16 years
BRIDGEPORT – Housatonic Community College this semester has set a new Spring enrollment record, registering 6,132 students at its downtown Bridgeport campus.
The number represents an increase of some 2.4 percent over the 5,989 students who registered in the Spring of 2011, and a 131 percent increase over the 2,653 who registered in the Fall of 1996, the college’s last semester at its old Barnum Avenue campus in the city’s east end.
“We continue to see the impact of the economic downturn on our enrollment,” said Registrar James Connolly. “More and more people are looking at community colleges as employees are outsourced or downsized and as families tighten their financial belts. Many realize that they can cut their tuition bill in half by going to a community college for two years and then transferring to a four-year school.”
This semester’s full-time is 1,184 students, down 11.6 percent from last Spring’s 2,132. Part-time enrollment hit the 4,248 mark, up 10.1 percent from last Spring’s 3,857.
Full-time equivalent enrollment at the college is 3,406 mark, down 5 percent from 3,422 a year ago.
The new results show that women still outnumber men at the campus. Some 63.4 percent (3,890) of the enrollees are women.
HCC continues to attract a diverse student body. Some 63.6 reported their ethnicity as either Black, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian/Native Alaskan, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, multiple race or other non-Caucasian. Of these, Black students comprised 30 percent (1,840); Hispanics, 25.3 percent (1,552); Asians, 3.3 percent (201); American Indian/Alaskan Natives, 0.1 percent (9); other race, 2.6 percent (157), and multiple races, 2.2 percent (135).
The college still draws the majority of its students from Bridgeport (2,845 students, 46.5 percent) and Stratford (794 students, 12.9 percent); followed by Shelton (376 students, 6.1 percent); Milford (359 students, 5.8 percent); Trumbull (310 students, 5.1 percent); Fairfield (263 students, 4.3 percent); Ansonia (159 students, 2.6 percent); Monroe (131 students, 2.1 percent); Derby (90 students, 1.5 percent); Seymour (58 students, 0.9 percent); and Easton (16 students, 0.3 percent).
