HCC to Offer CPC Program
BRIDGEPORT - Housatonic Community College will be offering a five-course program to become a Certified Professional Coder beginning in January.
A CPC takes a healthcare provider’s analysis and procedural phrases and translates them into codes. CPCs must be knowledgeable in the contents of health records in order to properly conduct research and provide correct coding. Physicians rely on these codes to be properly reimbursed for their services.
By the end of this 6-month program, students will have prepared for the CPC exam, attended an Advanced Coding workshop, and completed a mock CPC exam. Afterwards, they will be eligible to take the exam, which is administered at HCC. Topics covered in the program include medical language, terminology, and abbreviations; biology and anatomy basics; and coding guidelines.
The five required courses in the non-credit program are Medical Terminology (online course), Human Anatomy and Biology, Medical Coding ICD-9 and HCPC, Medical Coding CPT, and CPC Exam Review and Exam. Aside from the online course, all classes are held from 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
The Medical Terminology online course runs from Jan. 7 - Feb. 15. It covers language used by physicians as well as the causes and cures of human diseases. Owning a computer with internet access is a must. The fee is $195.
Human Anatomy and Biology runs from Jan. 7 - Feb. 6, Mondays and Wednesdays. There is no class on Jan. 21. This course covers the anatomy and physiology of several human organ systems, provides an overview of selected diseases, and a discussion of the biology of cancer. The fee is $195.
The Medical Coding ICD-9 and HCPC course runs from Feb. 25 - April 1, Mondays and Thursdays. There are no classes on March 11 and 14. This course covers the basic coding for diseases, injuries, and procedures. These codes, based on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), are used for processing health service payments and tracking health care costs. Students will review assigning codes as well as how coding applies to all body systems. The fee is $445. (A class in ICD-10 is being developed for the implementation of this new system on Oct. 1, 2014.)
Medical Coding CPT runs from April 8 - May 9, Mondays and Thursdays. This course covers the coding used in medical procedures a physician performs. Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) is intended only for outpatient treatment, but is the most needed coding skill. Students will review code modifiers, how to support CPT codes with ICD-9 codes, and prepare for the CPC Exam. The fee is $525.
CPC Exam Review and Exam, will run from May 13 - June 13, Mondays and Thursdays. There is no class on May 27. First, students will review advanced coding for operative reports. They will practice reading doctor’s notes and applying a code. Local policies will also be reviewed. Also, students will go through a comprehensive review of everything covered in the program, followed by a mock CPC exam. The fee is $495.
If they complete the courses satisfactorily, students will be eligible to take the CPC Exam, which will be held on Friday, June 14, from 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. To gain certification, students must pass the exam with a score of 71% or higher. The exam fee is not included in the program, and information regarding the fee will be provided by the instructor.
