HCC Offering Unique Course
In Reading, Writing, Communication Skills

Builds Literacy Skills for Certificate Exams,
Promotions, Resumes/Job Applications

BRIDGEPORT - Housatonic Community College next month will launch a unique non-credit course in reading, writing and communication skills.

The course, which used the Guided Mastery approach, was designed for recent high school graduates, and working adults who want to improve their literacy skills so they can continue in college, enter the workplace or move up the career ladder. The 13-week class, which is eligible for WIA (Workforce Investment Act) funding, begins Sept. 10.

“There are still many jobs and professions that don’t require a formal academic degree,” said HCC Dean of Community Outreach Denise S. Bukovan. “The new communications skills course is one of a series of new non-credit courses and programs we’ll be offering to provide students with needed skills and training they need to move into these jobs.”

This innovative program will be the only one of its kind in the state, said HCC Counselor Lynne Langella, who developed the course along with Counselor Marilyn Wehr and instructor Janet Zamparo. It will focus on strengthening reading comprehension, listening, speaking, information-gathering and writing skills

“An added benefit of the class is that, in its homework and exercises, it will emphasize problem solving and real life situations,” Langella said. “It will focus on such topics as budgeting, nutrition, health, conflict resolution and resumes, cover letters and job applications.”

With the Guided Mastery approach, she said, students are guided through the subject material in class as well as through the resources available to them through the college.

The course will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 10 - Dec. 12, 10 a.m. to noon, in Room B-125 in Lafayette Hall. The fee is $700, plus $50 for a textbook. Payments from other agencies are also accepted.
