Career Services, an integral part of Student Services at Housatonic
Community College, we are here to help you with all aspects of developing
your professional goals. The staff of the Career Services department
believes in taking a comprehensive approach to career development by
assisting you in the discovery of your skills, interests, needs and
values. Because the employment market is continually evolving bringing
with it new opportunities for work the Career Services provides up-to-date
information on careers in demand so that you choose a relevant career
path.
Choosing a Career
Choosing a career is a series of important decisions. During your lifetime,
you will spend two thirds of your time working. Helping you to find
work that is suitable, satisfying, challenging and will afford you a
comfortable life style is what career services is about.
It is important to take time for yourself and your future to understand
what your interests and values are when choosing a career. In order
to arrive at your career destination you need to know where you’re
going and what steps are necessary to succeed. Explore the possibilities;
research what a typical day at work is like, what you’ll be doing
and with whom and where you’ll be working. This is a time for
you to try new things, stretch yourself by taking a class that is different
from what you would usually take. You may find out that you like something
different and wish to develop new skills that will lead to a rewarding
career.
Know yourself – Interest Inventories & Assessments
The Career Center offers the best and most current tools in helping
you the student discover which skills you prefer to utilize and what
will be a productive and satisfying work environment. The Career Center
subscribes to several different career assessment tools used by career
professionals. Once you have begun to explore the possibilities, using
the career assessments, the staff of the Career Center will provide
one-on-one advice on how to interpret the results.
Academic Planning
When you select a major it is important to know what your career goals
are. Most people come to school to improve and acquire skills that will
lead to a successful career; the Career Services Center will assist
you in building a relevant program of study that will support your career
objectives.
